About Last Night

It’s another remake of an 80’s movie! Somewhere, Billy Ocean plots his comeback.

Michael Ealy stars as Danny – a restaurant supply salesman trying to figure out the world after breaking up with his girlfriend. His buddy, Bernie (Kevin Hart), enjoys going out and chasing the ladies, and wants Danny to join him, so he can get back in the game and sow some wild oats (and get over the lady who broke his heart).

When Bernie invites Danny to join him on a double date with Joan (Regina Hall) and Debbie (Joy Bryant), Debbie and Danny decide to take the date back to his place after an instant spark. However, it’s not just a one night stand as the two start to spend more and more time together, but we have to wonder whether or not they have found true love. Even they have to wonder.

Is it true love or true lust?

Is it even possible to find true love in this crazy mixed up world?

About Last Night is one of those passable movies full of predictability, but also some laughs. Ealy and Bryant have to carry the drama as we watch their characters trying to navigate the turmoil of their relationship, while Hall and Hart get to deliver the laughs and the raunchy stuff. However, that leads to the movie’s biggest problem.

Ealy and Bryant are strong actors and make what they can out of the run of the mill material they get, but Hart and Hall have the most interesting story, jokes and lines. I would rather be watching them! They make us laugh, while Ealy and Bryant have to deal with drama that just pops up out of nowhere on a regular basis. Hart and Hall are more compelling and capture the spirit and themes of the movie better because of the better material.

Writer Leslye Headland does a great job introducing the themes of people being afraid of true love, and how this fear contradicts the lack of fear to do crazy stuff in bed (separating what the heart needs from what the body needs), which is kind of amazing, since we are still dealing with these themes some 30 years after the original play and movie came out. Some things never change?

About Last Night is worth a few laughs, and far exceeds the dreadful competition, so you might as well check it out if you like Hart and Hall.
